Brest

Brest is one of the most visited tourist cities in Belarus, full of sights. In 2019, Brest celebrates its 1000th anniversary. Your attention - five places that you should definitely visit, while you are visiting the city on the river Bug.

1. Brest Fortress
Brest Fortress - one of the main attractions of the city. A unique architectural and sculptural ensemble in the open air was founded in honor of the defenders of the fortress and tellsthe visitors about the events of its heroic defense in June 1941.

The museums in the territory of the memorial complex will tell you more about the history of the defense of the Brest Fortress.

For locals - this is not only a military monument. In 1019 here, at the mouth of the Mukhavets river at its confluence with the Western Bug, a large, well-fortified ancient city was located. At a depth of 4 meters, archaeologists unearthed the streets, paved with wood, as well as wooden buildings of the XIII century. Now the excavation is preserved and is under the huge glass dome of the archaeological museum "Berestye".

Now the Brest Fortress is the largest monument in the ex-USSR to the courage of the Soviet people during the WWII and one of the most popular sights of Belarus.

2. Sovetskaya Street
Sovetskaya Street - the central Brest artery. At different times, it had the name Millionnaya str., Police str, the street named after Major Jerzy Dombrowski, Generalstraße. The current name was given in 1944. Sovetskaya Street was reconstructed more than once. The last transformation occurred in 2009. As a result, numerous small architectural forms, decorative elements, sculptures, frescoes and other objects that invariably attract tourists appeared.

Today Sovetskaya Street is a favorite place for family holidays, a must-see for all tourist routes. There are many cafes, brand shops, a cinema, pharmacies, hairdressers.

3. Monument to the 1000th anniversary of Brest
At the crossroads of Sovetskaya and Gogol streets, this monument appeared in 2009. Today theerection is one of the most popular among tourists visiting the city.

The height of the monument is 15 meters. It is conceived as a model of the city, expressed in historical images (Prince Vladimir Vasilkovich, Grand Duke of Lithuania Vitovt, as well as Nikolai Radzivil Black) and in generalized images of city residents (chronicler, soldier, mother). All figures are placed under the cover of the Guardian Angel. Six historical scenes were reflected on the circular high relief: the legend about the founding of Brest, the construction of the city, the participation of the Beresteis in the Battle of Grunwald, the defense of the Brest Fortress in 1941, space exploration.

4. Brest lamplighter and Lantern Alley
Only in Brest can one observe how the lamplighter lights kerosene lamps on Sovetskaya Street. At any time of the year, in the evenings, travelers gather here with cameras and follow the legendary city person from lantern to lantern.

The tradition of “lighting lanterns” on the main pedestrian street has existed in Brest since 2009. In total, 17 lamps of the kind were installed on Sovetskaya Street. They say that if you hold the button on the uniform of the lamplighter and make a wish, it will come true.

Today Brest is called the city of lanterns. And this is not by chance. Here on Gogol Street there is an alley with more than 40 wrought iron lamps. Each of them is a separate art object with an interesting idea. Several of them are made based on the literary works of N.V. Gogol, the rest varying from the blacksmith to the shoemaker, from the stove to the easel.

5. City Park May 1
May Day Park - the oldest and largest park in Brest - is the most popular park in the city. In 2006, the park celebrated its 100 years of existence.

The park skillfully combines a natural complex and an entertainment center. Nature lovers can admire dozens of rare tree species for this part of Europe.

Since recent times however, visitors to the park, are attracted primarily by its entertainment component. In fact, this is the Brest paradise of entertainment: an amphitheater, a restaurant and a cafe, attractions for every taste and age, a lot of sculptural compositions - photographic objects, catamarans, an island of lovers and a bridge to it - the goal of the newlyweds, and just beauty in the landscape design of the park. All these cannot but attract visitors to the city.
