EHF Cup qualification Round 1: Steaua go through, Zeleznicar lose to Kaerjeng

CSA

Two SEHA clubs got the first taste of European action over the past two weekends. CSA Steaua Bucuresti was more successful than Zeleznicar, as they qualified for the Second Round of the EHF Cup qualifications.

After beating Varazdin 1930 in the first match in Croatia, CSA Steaua Bucuresti have confidently got the job done in the second match in Bucharest. The second match ended 29:25 in the Romanians' favour which was more than enough to go through to the next round. Georgescu was terrific in the second match with 11 goals, whilst Andrei Mihalcea and Marin Vegar combined for 12 goals in the first match. Steaua will face Maccabi Rishon LeZion, who signed Rastko Stojkovic in the summer.

Zeleznicar 1949 have not been equally successful in the first round. They did win the first match in Nis, 30:27, but have lost 26:32 in Luxembourg, to Handball Kaerjeng. It's a bitter blow for Veselin Vujovic and his players who were hoping to make a decent result in this competition. Knezevic and Sretenovic scored 6 each in the second part of the double-header, but it wasn't enough despite holding onto a draw at the half. Djordje Spasic with 9 goals played really well in the first match, in which the Serbian vice-champions had a 7-goal lead after 30 minutes, but had to settle for a 3-goal win in the end.
