EHF competitions recap: Vardar's huge win in Zagreb, losses for Meshkov Brest and Nexe

EHF Recap

All eyes were on EHF Champions League and EHF Cup this weekend. First matches in the Last 16 phase were played and even though there are more matches on display on Sunday, all SEHA – Gazprom League Final 4 participants played their matches today. Here's how it unfolded.

EHFCL Last 16: Meshkov Brest – Flensburg-Handewitt 28:30 (14:14)

Belarusians got off to a terrific start, holding a 1-goal lead for the majority of the time in the very close first half. It was 14:14 heading into the break, in a very interesting duel. However, Flensburg went on a big run in the second half, which allowed them to go up by as much as 8 goals on two occasions. Meshkov did manage to close the deficit to -2 in the end, which is not a bad result considering that Flensburg were up by 8, only a few minutes until the final whistle before the Belarusians went on a 6:0 run.  Former Flensburg player Djordjic scored 6 goals for the home side, while Kulak added 5. Ivan Pesic recorded 9 saves.

EHFCL Last 16: PPD Zagreb – Vardar 18:27 (6:14)

Vardar had a spectacular first half today in Zagreb, holding the hosts to only 6 goals in the first 30 minutes. PPD Zagreb managed to play better at the start of the second half but made some costly mistakes. Vardar were strong enough to keep a commanding lead until the very end and to the second leg of the double-header. Milosavljev was the man of the match with 14 saves, Kristopans and Karacic scored 5 each, Moraes had 4 and Cupic and Dissinger chipped in 3 goals each. For PPD Zagreb, Mandic scored 5 goals and Mrakovcic netted 3 times.

EHF Cup Group B: Nexe – Grundfos-Tatabanya 26:29 (9:14)

In a match where a win would confirm them a place in the next stage of the competition, Nexe recorded a loss against the strong Hungarian side Tatabanya. The away team was in the lead since early on and did not allow a comeback for Hrvoje Horvat and his team. Tatabanya even had a 7-goal lead in the first half, but Nexe managed to pull it down to -3 in the end. Buvinic scored 5, while Zrnic had 4 goals for the Nasice squad. Nexe will now likely need a draw in Germany against Hannover if they want to secure a place in the next phase.
