Veszprem surprisingly easy through Brest

«Веспрем» побеждает в Бресте сюрпризно легко

Meshkov Brest - Veszprem

Veszprem have for the second time this season managed to celebrate versus Meshkov in SEHA Gazprom League preventing Belarus champions to fulfill their wishes of finishing the year with a positive derby. Instead of a true derby we have had Veszprem easily cruising towards three new points.

Reigning champions have finished the match with +12 (37:25) and now have 22 points without a loss this season which puts them on third place after eighth matches.

Hosts were able to stay close for 10 minutes with scoreboard saying 4:4. However Hungarians have with complete dominance in next ten minutes managed to extend the lead to 12:8 with Meshkov’ goalie Charapenka picking up an injury which forced him to leave the court leaving Dzmitry Patotski with a difficult task between bars until the end of the match.

Veszprem’ defense was working amazing once again stopping Meshkov’ backs who are usually most important part of their game. Their transition was on the other side running perfectly punishing every technical mistake.

Marguč finished the match with 11 goals from 12 attempts. Ivan Slišković added 8, Mate Lekai 8 for Veszprem. Veszprem were after less than 40 minutes already 10 goals up and from that moment on it was only matter of how big the difference will be in the end.

Xavi Sabate , Veszprem’s coach:

We’ve played a good match against a strong team. We did not have much time to prepare for this, almost none with some players being injured but key to our win was our performance in the second part of the first half. It was difficult to play against Meshkov as they intend to change their defensive system quite often which can surprise you sometimes.

Ivan Slišković,  Veszprem’s player:

We’ve played a good game. Quality difference was quite visible today and it was in my opinion match-deciding factor today.

Sergey Bebeshko, Meshkov’s coach:

Veszprem were today stronger team in all aspects. We’ve played against one of Europe’s best teams. Our goalkeeper Charapenka got injured after only 15 minutes and Patotski does not have required experience for such a game. We have to think about this game. Professional players should play fully motivated and focused until the end and not think about vacations before the final whistle.

Maksim Baranau, Meshkov’s player:

I agree with the coach, we did not fight until the end. Veszprem is a strong team, and we got a serious lesson. I hope we’ll show better performances in future matches.
